Yesterday, Rhea and I headed to Milwaukee to see Andrew WK perform his I Get Wet album in its entirety. We Got to Milwaukee about 5pm and checked in to our hotel; the Ambassador Hotel, which turned out just perfect as it was no more than a minutes walk to the AWK show at The Rave. The hotel was nice even though some of the reviews online weren’t so favourable. We had no complaints. Everything was just fine. We relaxed for a while before getting some Taco Bell for dinner. Good stuff! Cheap tacos for dinner… What could possibly go wrong? Thankfully for us, nothing. We chowed down on our food and headed to the gig. We walked in and the gig was downstairs in some crazy underground lookin’ bar. It was kinda cool. Decent sound and stage size and upon walking in, we were given free tickets to see Janes Addiction the following night. Um, let’s put this into perspective… Did the tickets sell that badly for this show that they have to give away 2 tickets to every person who walks through the door or were we just lucky? Not that I care cos Janes Addiction aren’t my thing at all but still, you’d think these guys would be pretty popular.

The first act on was some rap rock electronica one man show called Alestair X… or something. Not my thing at all.

Next was Math The Band. Another band mixing electronica and rock. The difference being that they are a 2 piece band and have a minimal drum kit (one drum and one cymbal). They were ok; again, not my thing but the kids dug ‘em!

Next up was Andrew WK. They were celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his I Get Wet album and for this special occasion, they were playing it in its entirety. From the moment they started, the crowd went nuts. It was insane! As he tore through the album by song after song, I was getting so exhausted. I mean, I was just standing there but watching AWK is enough to tire you out. He played an additional 8 songs to the album, finishing with We Want Fun, of course. By the time this song was coming to an end, it seemed like a third of the audience was on stage with him. Now, I don’t mind people stage diving at shows but I really don’t understand those who jump on stage with the whole “hey, look at me!” thing going on. I mean, dude, really, if you wanna be on stage, start a fuckin’ band! Still, I was not going to let these jerks ruin my  night. After the show we returned to our hotel and crashed.

Waking up the next day (today), we were greeted with some dreary weather. The fog was thick and intense… At almost 11am. Crazy! We headed off to a diner called Katie’s diner as apparently it was inspired by Happy Days. It looked nothing like Arnold’s but their pancakes are awesome breakfast. Was a good feed.

From their we headed to Value Village which is a giant thrift store; then Vortex comics so Rhea could get some more study materials (ie. comics). I picked up some Halloween comics (yeah, like the horror movies) so I can use the art for a Michael Myers tattoo. Yep.

We also hit up Collectors Edge comics and some record stores. We went to Rushmore records which was all new stock which was a shame. I did grab the self titled album by The Goodnight Album though but that was it. Headed to Rushmore Records after that which was filled with second hand records as well as new stuff. Bought a good amount of stuff on the cheap there so that was exciting. Got some Journey records that I didn’t have, a rare Radio Birdman limited release, a Dubrovniks album, and a couple 12″ singles by the Ramones and the Nomads. Not a bad day at all.

To finish off our time in Milwaukee, we went and did the obligatory photos at the Fonz statue. Yes, Milwaukee has a bronze statue of Arthur Fonzarelli from the show, Happy Days. Got the photos, smiles all round, we left. Got on to the highway and headed back to Chicago.

On the way home we stopped at the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha. It’s a castle shaped building that houses… Yep, you guessed it… Cheese! I grabbed some chocolates from there cos I’m random like that. Oh, and cos I love chocolate. These were über tasty too!

Once back in Chicago, we had dinner at a place called Gino’s. It’s a deep dish pizza place and we had a cheese pizza. The waitress thought I was from England and when I told her that I was Australian, she told me that was even cooler. I guess not many Aussies visit Rolling Meadows. Regardless, I did and the food was delish! Yumbo!

We returned home from that and Rhea fell asleep pretty quickly. I am now sitting up awake writing this at 2:02am and technically I should be sleeping cos I never get a decent sleep. I mean, I should be able to sleep but this cold I caught keeps fucking with me. Coughing and spluttering. So annoying.

ANYWAY… Tomorrow I am off to interview Oderus Urungus from the band GWAR before their show tomorrow night. Good times! Let’s rock!

Time to sleep. Thanks for reading.

So today I heard that long time legendary Brisbane band, The Onyas, are calling it a day. It’s been 20 years as a hard rockin’ band and they delievered the goods so if this is the end, then at least they weren’t lazy during their time together releasing a slew of 7″ vinyl all over the world, a bunch of records and influencing a ton of bands. I still remember the first time I saw them at the Crown & Anchor Hotel in Adelaide with the Bloodsucking Freaks as support. That night was awesome and The Onyas were unreal. I remember buying a t-shirt and the 7″ vinyl of Beer Gut at that show and becoming a big fan. I dedicate this episode to them. There’s also talk of Big Day Out stuff and heaps of random anecdotes and most of all, I spin the brand new single by the Green Lady Killers… HOT OFF THE PRESS! But did I mention just how awesome the music is here? Well, you will hear some of the best goddamn music you will ever hear. Oh, and you should all go here and buy the Green Lady Killers stuff. Yeah, Hup!

So I don’t ever usually review shows I paid a ticket for but I have to rave about this one cos it was heaps awesome n stuff. Here’s the scoop; I bought a ticket cos Iggy & The Stooges was announced. Now, anyone who knows me knows that I was deported from the UK in May last year when I went to see Iggy & The Stooges at the Hammersmith Odeon so finally getting to see them was a big deal for me (I should state that the reason I was deported is that the UK Customs thought I was going to the UK work illegally so they refused me entry and didn’t attempt to ring my friends and confirm my reasons for being in the UK which was to see Iggy & The Stooges!). Then to add to the awesomeness, Andrew WK, The Black Keys, Airbourne and the Jim Jones Revue were added. I was uber excited! Sadly, closer to show time, The Black Keys cancelled their Australian show due to excessive touring burnout. I was kinda sad but once I got there, I didn’t care.

As soon as I got through the gates I headed to see the Jim Jones Revue. I am a huge fan of these cats and so seeing them live was gonna be sweet as! They came on stage to thunderous applause and tore it up, bigtime. I was fuckin stoked! Dancing like a dancey thing, groovin’ and movin’. It was wild. So wild that because I love you peeps, here’s a video I took of the JJR kickin’ off their set with “Dishonest John”…

From the JJR, I headed off quickly to the main stages to catch the last 20 minutes of Melbourne rockers, Airbourne. As always, a great rock n roll show was delivered to the enthusiastic crowd. What a band! Great songs, high energy, the whole kaboodle. Brilliant!

I then headed to see Andrew WK party hard with his band and party hard they did. What a set! AWK is good time party music. On a day that was a scorcher in the weather stakes (38 degrees), the crowd didn’t let that stop them from going fuckin’ apeshit in a huge circle pit once AWK sang his anthemic “Party Hard”. Here’s proof…

I waited around for a bit in the Lilyworld area for Andrew WK to make a solo appearance where he and random members of the crowd sang and played along to spontaneous covers of Billy Joel and The Troggs. It was pretty awesome. I had to laugh. Another good time for all involved. At this point, I managed to have a quick chat to Andrew who was more than nice. A top dude. Also spoke to his band members about Obituary. And why not? Classic stuff!

Time was drawing near for Iggy & The Stooges… a band I was longing to see. When 6:30pm rolled around, securing a front row spot, I was treated to an hour of pure rock n roll as the band launched into “Raw Power” and tore it up, inviting the crowd to get on stage and dance with him during “Shake Appeal” thus causing chaos for the BDO Security at the front of the stage. It took the security 3 songs to remove the crowd from the area between the stage and the barrier. Classic! It was heaps awesome. Want proof? Bust this…

After The Stooges were done, I headed back to Lilyworld as I had been tipped off on a band from Japan called Red Bacteria Vacuum. Well, that was indeed the best decision made that day as these 3 Japanese girls kicked out the fuckin’ jams with a blast of insane punk rock meets metal and pop. Totally off the wall and nothing short of mind-blowing. I suggest you check this band out STAT! When the band were done, I headed off. I didn’t need to sit through Rammstein or Tool. Nothing was going to compare to the bands I had seen that day. Yep, awesome.

Here’s a bunch of photos I took… enjoy!

It’s been a long week as I have been busy studying, working, writing, and seeing shows. It was heaps good to have some time to kick back and spin some records. This weeks show is filled with heartbreaking, relationshit rock n roll and power pop! Again, it wasn’t planned that way, it just happened. One song just lead to another and the show just flowed and rocked. There’s so much included in the show this week including talk of record fairs, the Pyramid Rock Festival, the No Sleep Til Festival, The Replacements, gig reviews, September 11th remembered, plus so much more. The music is heaps awesome this week and you can listen to the show right now by clicking this link or if you would rather download an mp3 of the show, you can do so by clicking this link.
